This event will be a celebration to highlight the progress we have made together to break the civic chains that have confined Black and Brown people’s voices for far too long. We have a long way to go, but we should celebrate these monumental milestones:
House Bill 254: The Reentering Citizens Civic Education Act: To mandate peer-taught civics courses for everyone within a year of release from IDOC and IDJJ. This bill gets folks up to date on civics, voting processes, and government systems during re-entry.
Senate Bill 2090: Voting in Jail: To ensure that every county sets up a vote-by-mail system within jails. This legislation establishes the first-ever temporary polling place inside a jail.
