We’ve finally passed a constitutional amendment to the Illinois income tax code in both chambers of the Illinois State Legislature. This will allow us to put a referendum on the ballot, which will ask voters to decide if they want to amend the constitution from a flat income tax (everyone pays the same) to a graduated income tax (higher earners pay more than lower earners).
This historic vote is due to years of organizing from grassroots organizations, unions and progressive legislators. We now need to leverage that same coalition to reach voters in Illinois before the 2020 General Election.
It is up to us to talk to our neighbors and get them to vote “yes” on a binding referendum that will appear on their ballots in November of 2020. Voters will be asked a if they are in favor of amending the constitution to implement a graduated, instead of flat income tax.
November of 2020 might seem like a long ways away, but in reality it really isn’t a whole lot of time for us to reach the thousands of people who will show up to vote in November. That is why we need to start talking to our neighbors ASAP.
Join me for our Fair Tax Kick off Canvass to begin our work on educating and activating our neighbors on this issue here in the 39th District.
