Join NSAR on Thursday evening May 17 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to phone bank for ERA Illinois.
SJRCA4 provides for the ratification of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Two more states need to ratify the ERA for it to become part of the Constitution. Illinois could be one of those states.
In fact, the Illinois Senate passed the amendment in mid April without debate. It’s now headed to the Illinois house — likely this month. But it’s sponsor, Rep. Lou Lang, says passage isn’t a given. The amendment needs 71 votes in the House. That means Lang needs the support of some Republican lawmakers. The bill doesn’t need Rauner’s signature.
But we sure do need you to get Illinois’ representatives motivated. We’ll be calling Illinois constituents, urging them to get their Reps to vote YASSSSS!
Without the ERA, women aren’t guaranteed equal justice under the law as men are. The 14th amendment’s equal protection clause doesn’t protect against sex-based discrimination. But now, in the #metoo era, it’s time for this amendment to finally be fulfilled.
Among the ways the amendment can help women today:
-Closing the gender pay gap
-Ensuring paid maternity leave
-Protecting and supporting healthcare and reproductive rights
-Ensuring rape kits are tested
-Increasing prosecution for domestic violence
Please bring your laptop, phone, and ear phones. Snacks provided. RSVP now. Look forward to seeing you there!
