Celebrate feminist superheroes who are dedicated to making our city and state a better place for all women and girls at Chicago NOW’s Women Who Dared 2019. Get energized in the fight for equality and justice with stories of the power of activism from this year’s extraordinary honorees: Illinois State Representative Kelly Cassidy, and advocate and public servant Sendy Soto.
Kelly Cassidy has spent more than 20 years working to make government more accessible, efficient and effective as an organizer, legislative director for Chicago NOW, and currently as state representative for the 14th district of Illinois. From legislating for reproductive rights and marijuana legalization, to standing against sexual harassment, to advocating for LGBTQ rights, equal pay, economic justice and criminal justice reform, Kelly has established herself as a progressive force for local women and marginalized communities.
Sendy Soto is a trusted advisor to community organizations, government officials and healthcare executives, and an industrious public servant focused on myriad issues—including immigration, healthcare, food insecurity, education, civil rights, women’s rights and housing. She is the founder and executive director of the Chicago Immigrant Transit Assistance (CITA), supporting asylum-seeking families and individuals with ground transportation and emotional support upon leaving ICE detention centers.
Women Who Dared is Chicago NOW’s annual fundraising event and our chance to honor and thank Chicago leaders for their vital contributions to the feminist community. Proceeds from this event enable us to continue our important activist work, focused on six pillars: economic equity, ending violence against women, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), LGBTQ rights, racial justice and reproductive justice.
